What it means in practice
In a pacs.004 payment return, a return reason code explains why funds that were already settled are being sent back. It sits in TxInf/RtrRsnInf/Rsn/Cd, and bank statements (camt.053, camt.054) repeat it in RtrInf/Rsn/Cd.
The payment was seen as a duplicate of one already received. Banks compare amount, date, parties and references; a second payment with the same data is held or rejected.
What to do
- Check whether the first payment was settled. If the second payment was genuinely needed, send it with a distinct reference and tell the beneficiary bank why.
