Swift MT Messages

MT messages are the ISO 15022 based messages banks, brokers, custodians, corporates and market infrastructures exchange over Swift FIN. The first digit of the type is its category, from 1 (customer payments) to 9 (cash management). This list covers every type in the current Swift standard, plus recently retired types.

69 message types have a full page: every sequence and field with its format, an annotated example you can open in the parser, the common rejects and the ISO 20022 equivalent. The other 143 types in the current standard have a catalogue entry that explains what the message is for, who sends it to whom and its ISO 20022 equivalent, and 23 retired types are listed for reference.

Cross-border payment instructions between banks moved to ISO 20022 on Swift on 22 November 2025; securities, treasury and trade finance messages remain in use on FIN. See the migration guide.
