MT500 Instruction to Register
Written and maintained by ZagTrader. Last reviewed . How this page is sourced and checked
The MT500 is sent by an account owner to its account servicer to have securities registered, deregistered or re-registered in a beneficial owner’s name at the registration provider. The sender is typically a global custodian instructing its sub-custodian, a sub-custodian instructing its clearing agent, or another financial institution with an account at a local agent. The same message type cancels an earlier registration instruction.

What MT500 is used for
Registration matters in markets where shares are held in the name of the end investor on the issuer’s register rather than in a nominee name. The MT500 carries the registration details (sequence B, with the financial instrument and the safekeeping account) and, optionally, client details in sequence C, such as the address and personal details of the person to be registered.
Field 23G gives the function: NEWM for a new instruction, CANC to cancel one sent earlier. The linkages sequence (A1) can tie the registration to a settlement instruction such as an MT540 or MT541 when settlement and registration depend on each other. The servicer reports progress with an MT510 and confirms the completed registration with an MT501. Changes to an existing holder’s details go in an MT519, not an MT500.

Fields
This is a catalogue entry: the field-by-field structure is not shown here because we publish structures only where we have checked them against public sources. Paste an MT500 into the parser to see each field decoded with its tag, name and value.
ISO 20022
Swift’s MT and MX equivalence tables list no ISO 20022 equivalent for the MT500. Category 5 messages were not part of the November 2025 payments deadline and stay in use on FIN.
MT500 questions
- What is the difference between MT500 and MT519?
- The MT500 asks for securities to be registered, deregistered or re-registered. The MT519 changes the client details held by the registration provider, for example a new address, without moving the registration itself.
- How do I cancel an MT500?
- Send another MT500 with 23G CANC that refers to the original instruction. The servicer answers the cancellation request with an MT510.
