MT786 Guarantee / Standby Letter of Credit Demand Refusal
Written and maintained by ZagTrader. Last reviewed . How this page is sourced and checked
The MT786 is the issuer’s refusal of a demand made under a guarantee or standby letter of credit. The issuer sends it to the bank that is the beneficiary or that presented the demand, directly or through another bank, with the reasons for refusal as narrative text. It was introduced in the November 2021 guarantee release.

What MT786 is used for
A demand arrives as an MT765 or on paper. If the issuer finds it does not comply with the guarantee, for example because the required statement is missing or the demand came after expiry, it sends an MT786 quoting the undertaking number, the date the demand was submitted, the amount demanded and the reasons. It can also say what it is doing with any documents.
Rules such as URDG 758 and ISP98 expect the refusal notice to state every reason, so the narrative in the MT786 matters for any later dispute. For documentary credits the equivalent refusal is the MT734.
