MT416 Advice of Non-Payment/Non-Acceptance
Written and maintained by ZagTrader. Last reviewed . How this page is sourced and checked
The MT416 advises the remitting bank that a collection, or part of it, was not paid or not accepted by the drawee. The collecting bank sends it, directly or through another institution, and a presenting bank can send it to a collecting bank. Each document that failed is reported in its own occurrence of sequence B.

What MT416 is used for
Field 23E says whether it is a non-payment (NPAY), a non-acceptance (NACC) or another, bilaterally agreed case (OTHR, with narrative). It is given once in sequence A for the whole message or in each occurrence of sequence B, never in both. The same choice applies to the charges (71F) and the reason (77A): if they appear in sequence A they cannot appear in sequence B.
The MT416 is a single currency message and can be up to 10,000 characters, so many documents can be reported at once. Its use requires registration in a Swift message user group (MUG). Field 51A is allowed only when the message is sent by FileAct, not in FIN.

MT416 questions
- What do NPAY and NACC mean in an MT416?
- They are the codes of field 23E: NPAY reports that the drawee did not pay, NACC that the drawee did not accept the draft. OTHR is used for a bilaterally agreed case explained in narrative.
- Why is my MT416 rejected with D83?
- Field 71F or 77A appears both in sequence A and in sequence B. Put charges and reasons either once in sequence A for the whole message or per document in sequence B.
