MT410 Acknowledgement (Collections)
Written and maintained by ZagTrader. Last reviewed . How this page is sourced and checked
The MT410 is the Swift message a collecting bank sends to the remitting bank to acknowledge that it has received a collection, with the amount and maturity it understood. Unless it says otherwise, it also confirms that the collecting bank intends to act on the collection instruction. One MT410 can acknowledge up to ten items, as long as they are in the same currency.

When MT410 is used
In a documentary collection the exporter’s bank (the remitting bank) sends shipping documents and a collection instruction to a bank in the buyer’s country (the collecting bank), under the ICC Uniform Rules for Collections (URC 522). The documents usually travel by courier, the instruction sometimes too. The MT410 is the first message back: the collecting bank confirms that the collection has arrived, quotes the remitting bank’s reference and its own, and repeats the amount and maturity.
The acknowledgement matters for both sides. The remitting bank can stop tracing the documents and tell its customer, the exporter, that they reached the buyer’s bank. Unless the MT410 expressly says otherwise, it also states that the collecting bank intends to act in line with the collection instruction. If the collecting bank does not apply the URC rules, it should say so in the message, and field 72 has codes for common problems, for example DRAWEE when there is not enough information to contact the drawee, or FORWARD when the collection is passed on to a branch.
Fields 20, 21 and 32a form a group that may repeat up to ten times, one group per item, so one MT410 can acknowledge several collections, or several items of one collection. A multiple MT410 must still relate to one collection for at least one of the two banks. When the banks count items differently (the remitting bank sent two collections that the collecting bank books as one, or the reverse), the repeated pairs of 20 and 21 show the mapping. All amounts in one MT410 must be in the same currency, so a collection in two currencies needs two messages.
After the MT410 the collecting bank presents the documents to the drawee. Later messages follow the outcome: an MT412 when the drawee accepts a draft, an MT416 when it refuses to pay or accept, and an MT400 when it pays and the proceeds are remitted. If no acknowledgement arrives, the remitting bank can chase with an MT420 Tracer.
MT410 format: sequences and fields
Acknowledged items (repetitive)Mandatory, repeatable
Fields 20, 21 and 32a repeat together, once per item acknowledged, up to ten times. The standard shows this as a repetitive group without a sequence letter.
| Tag | Name | Status | Format | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | Sending Bank's TRNRepeatable | M | 16x | The collection number given by the sender, the collecting bank, for this item. It must not start or end with a slash or contain two slashes in a row. |
| 21 | Related ReferenceRepeatable | M | 16x | The receiver’s collection number for this item, from its collection instruction. If it is too long for the field, the code SEE72 is used and the reference goes in field 72. |
| 32a | Amount AcknowledgedOptions A, B or KRepeatable | M | A: 6!n3!a15d B: 3!a15d K: 1!a3!n2!a3!a15d | The maturity given in the collection instruction, then the currency and amount acknowledged. Option A: fixed maturity date (YYMMDD). Option B: no maturity date known. Option K: a period, D (days) or M (months), a three-digit number and a two-letter code such as ST (after sight), for example D090STUSD42000,00 for 90 days after sight. |
Additional informationOptional
Field 72 appears once, after the last repeated group.
| Tag | Name | Status | Format | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 72 | Sender to Receiver Information | O | 6*35x | More information about the collection. Codes: DRAWEE (not enough information to contact the drawee, please instruct), FORWARD (the collection is being passed to a branch, which the remitting bank should deal with from now on) and REC (instructions for the receiver), each between slashes at the start of a line. |
Format notation: n digits, a upper-case letters, c upper-case letters and digits, x any character of the Swift character set, d a decimal number with a comma, ! fixed length, [ ] optional, 4*35x up to 4 lines of 35 characters. M mandatory, O optional, C conditional (a rule decides).
Rules worth knowing
- Fields 20, 21 and 32a may not appear more than ten times (rule C1 in the handbook, error code T10).
- The currency in 32a must be the same in every occurrence in the message (error C02). A collection involving two or more currencies is acknowledged with separate MT410s.
- In 32a option K, the first character is D or M (error T61) and the two-letter code is one of BE (after date of bill of exchange), CC (after customs clearance of goods), FD (after the goods pass food and drug administration), FP (first presentation), GA (after arrival of goods), ID (after invoice date), ST (after sight), TD (after date of transport documents) or XX (explained in field 72) (error T20).
- Traditional collection terms such as primo or ultimo are written as a date with option A.
- A multiple MT410 must refer to one collection for at least one of the two banks.
- Unless the message says otherwise, it states that the collecting bank intends to act according to the collection instruction. If the collecting bank does not apply the ICC Uniform Rules for Collections, the message should say so.
MT410 example
BANKGB2LXXX in London sent ZagTrader Test Bank, Dubai (ZAGTAEADXXX) two collections drawn by Acme Components Ltd on Gulf Trading LLC: BGLC2610050088 for USD 85,000.00 at sight (documents against payment) and BGLC2610050091 for USD 42,000.00 payable 90 days after sight (documents against acceptance). On 9 October 2026 the collecting bank acknowledges both in one MT410, one repeated group per collection.

The BICs, names and references are made up.
When the drawee pays the first collection, the collecting bank sends an MT400 quoting BGLC2610050088 in field 21. When it accepts the draft under the second, it sends an MT412.
Common errors and rejects
More than ten items (T10)
Fields 20, 21 and 32a may repeat at most ten times. Split a larger batch into several MT410s.
Mixed currencies (C02)
All occurrences of 32a must use the same currency. Acknowledge collections in another currency, or the other currency part of a collection, in a separate MT410.
Wrong day/month indicator or code in 32K (T61, T20)
Option K starts with D or M, then exactly three digits and one of the listed two-letter codes.
D90ST(two digits) or a free word such as SIGHT fails validation; for anything not covered use XX and explain in field 72.Field 72 placed inside the repeating group
Field 72 comes once, after the last 20/21/32a group. A 72 between groups breaks the message structure and fails validation.
Remitting bank’s reference missing from 21
Field 21 must carry the receiver’s collection number. When it does not fit, write SEE72 and give the full reference in field 72, otherwise the remitting bank cannot match the acknowledgement.
ISO 20022
There is no ISO 20022 equivalent of the MT410: Swift’s MT and MX equivalence tables (May 2024 edition) list none for it. Collections (category 4) were not part of the CBPR+ migration that ended MT/MX coexistence for cross-border payment instructions on 22 November 2025, and collection messages are still exchanged in MT format.
Only the eventual movement of proceeds is affected: when the collection is paid, the bank-to-bank transfer is a pacs.009 on Swift today.
MT410 questions
- What is an MT410?
- It is the Acknowledgement in documentary collections: the collecting bank confirms to the remitting bank that it has received a collection, with the references and the amount and maturity it understood.
- Does an MT410 mean the collecting bank will act on the instruction?
- Yes, unless the message says otherwise. It states that the collecting bank intends to follow the collection instruction. Problems, such as not being able to reach the drawee, are flagged in field 72.
- Can one MT410 acknowledge several collections?
- Yes. Fields 20, 21 and 32a repeat as a group up to ten times, provided all amounts are in the same currency and the message relates to one collection for at least one of the banks.
- What is the difference between MT410 and MT412?
- The MT410 acknowledges receipt of the collection. The MT412 Advice of Acceptance comes later and reports that the drawee has accepted one or more drafts.
- What if no MT410 arrives?
- The remitting bank can send an MT420 Tracer to ask the collecting bank whether it received the collection and what has happened to it.
