MT112 Status of a Request for Stop Payment of a Cheque

Written and maintained by ZagTrader. Last reviewed . How this page is sourced and checked

The MT112 is the drawee bank’s answer about a cheque stop: it tells the drawer bank whether the stop was recorded, until when it is valid, or why it cannot be placed. It usually replies to an MT111, quoting the cheque number, date and amount, with the answer in field 76.

When MT112 is used

After a drawer bank asks it to stop a cheque (normally with an MT111), the drawee bank sends an MT112 to report what it has done. It may also send one when the stop request reached it by other means.

The MT112 has no field that quotes the MT111’s reference. It identifies the cheque instead: field 21 carries the cheque number and fields 30, 32a and 59 repeat the cheque details, with 32a identical to the MT111. The drawer bank matches the answer to its request by cheque number.

Field 76 gives the answer, in narrative or with numbered answers that mirror the numbered queries of the MT111: /13/ stop recorded, /14/ stop valid until a date, /12/ stop not acceptable with a reason, /10/ authorisation to debit, /11/ cover refunded, /2/ transaction effected on a date.

Rules worth knowing

  • There are no network validated rules for the MT112.
  • When it answers an MT111, field 32a must be identical to field 32a of the MT111.
  • In field 76, each answer goes on its own line. Required details, such as the date after /14/, come first after the answer number; a second piece of information is preceded by a slash.

Common errors and rejects

  1. Answer cannot be matched to the request

The MT112 has no related reference field. If field 21 does not carry exactly the cheque number used in the MT111, or 32a differs, the drawer bank’s system cannot match it. Copy both from the MT111.

  2. Stop expires unnoticed

An answer /14/ gives the date until which the stop is valid. If the cheque is still outstanding near that date, the drawer bank has to renew the stop; the MT112 does not remind anyone.

  3. Reimbursement request left unanswered

If the MT111 asked for something (for example /18/, authorisation to debit, or /19/, refund of cover), field 76 should answer it too, with /10/ or /11/. Answering only the stop leaves the drawer bank to chase the rest.

  4. Account given in the payee field

Field 59 identifies the payee by name and address; the account part must not be used.

MT112 in ISO 20022

The ISO 20022 equivalent is camt.109 Cheque Cancellation or Stop Report, which the drawee agent sends to the drawer agent about a stop request made with camt.108. The J.P. Morgan ISO 20022 messaging adoption schedule names the MT112 as its MT equivalent.

Cheque messages were not part of the 22 November 2025 migration of payment instructions: BNY’s May 2025 notice says MT110, MT111 and MT112 continue to be supported until Swift defines a date.

MT112 questions

What is an MT112?
The drawee bank’s status report on a request to stop payment of a cheque: it says whether the stop was recorded, how long it is valid, or why it is not acceptable.
What do /13/ and /14/ mean in field 76?
/13/ means the stop instructions have been duly recorded. /14/ followed by a date (YYMMDD) gives the date until which the stop instructions are valid.
How is an MT112 linked to the MT111?
By the cheque, not by a reference: field 21 is the cheque number and field 32a must equal the MT111’s 32a. There is no field quoting the MT111’s field 20.
What is the difference between MT112 and MT196?
The MT112 answers a cheque stop request only. The MT196 is the general answer message in category 1, used for MT192 cancellation requests and MT195 queries.
What is the ISO 20022 equivalent of the MT112?
camt.109 Cheque Cancellation or Stop Report.
