MT600 Commodity Trade Confirmation
Written and maintained by ZagTrader. Last reviewed . How this page is sourced and checked
The MT600 confirms a commodity trade, most often a spot or forward deal in gold, silver, platinum or palladium. Each of the two trading parties, or a bank acting for them, sends it to the other after the deal is agreed, and it is also used to confirm amendments, cancellations and the settlement of an exercised commodity option.

What MT600 is used for
The message works like the MT300 for foreign exchange. Sequence A holds the contract: the two parties (fields 82a and 87a), the trade date, the commodity in field 26C (delivery location, allocated or unallocated, and the metal or coin), the price per unit and the master agreement in field 77H. Sequence B gives the settlement of the commodity the Sender bought, sequence C the commodity it sold, each with the quantity, the consideration in money and the account with institution. Sequence D is an optional block for reporting the trade to a trade repository, with the reporting jurisdiction and the unique transaction identifier.
Precious metals are often held unallocated in a loco London account, so field 26C shows whether the metal is allocated or unallocated and where it is held. The movement of the metal itself is then instructed with an MT604 and advised with an MT606 or MT607. Options on commodities are confirmed with the MT601, and commodity loans and deposits with the MT620.

Fields
This is a catalogue entry: the field-by-field structure is not shown here because we publish structures only where we have checked them against public sources. Paste an MT600 into the parser to see each field decoded with its tag, name and value.
ISO 20022
No ISO 20022 equivalent: Swift’s MT and MX equivalence tables list none for the category 6 commodity messages. Category 6 was not part of the November 2025 move of cross-border payment instructions to ISO 20022, so the message is still exchanged as MT on Swift.
MT600 questions
- Is the MT600 only for precious metals?
- No. Its commodity codes cover the precious metals and also base metals such as copper, aluminium and zinc, plus a code for other commodities. In practice it is used mostly for bullion trades between banks and their clients.
- What is the difference between the MT600 and the MT601?
- The MT600 confirms an outright commodity trade (spot or forward). The MT601 confirms a commodity option, with strike price, premium, expiry and settlement type.
- Did the MT600 move to ISO 20022 in November 2025?
- No. The end of MT and ISO 20022 coexistence in November 2025 covered cross-border payment instructions. Commodity confirmations in category 6 have no ISO 20022 equivalent and remain MT messages on Swift.
