MT601 Commodity Option Confirmation
Written and maintained by ZagTrader. Last reviewed . How this page is sourced and checked
The MT601 confirms an option contract on a commodity, for example a call or put on gold. The two parties to the option, or banks and fund managers acting for them, exchange it to confirm a new option, an amendment, a cancellation or the surrender of the option by the holder to the writer for compensation.

What MT601 is used for
Sequence A carries the option itself: the parties, the commodity in field 26C, the earliest exercise date when the option can be exercised early, the expiry details, the final settlement date, the settlement type, the quantity, the strike price, the premium price and the premium payment with its settlement instructions. An optional sequence B holds trade repository reporting data, as in the MT600.
When an option is exercised and settles physically, the resulting commodity trade is confirmed with an MT600. Options on currencies are not confirmed with the MT601 but with the MT305 or MT306.

Fields
This is a catalogue entry: the field-by-field structure is not shown here because we publish structures only where we have checked them against public sources. Paste an MT601 into the parser to see each field decoded with its tag, name and value.
ISO 20022
No ISO 20022 equivalent: Swift’s MT and MX equivalence tables list none for the category 6 commodity messages. Category 6 was not part of the November 2025 move of cross-border payment instructions to ISO 20022, so the message is still exchanged as MT on Swift.
