MT744 Notice of Non-Conforming Reimbursement Claim
Written and maintained by ZagTrader. Last reviewed . How this page is sourced and checked
The MT744 is the reimbursing bank’s answer to a reimbursement claim that does not conform to the authorisation it received. The reimbursing bank sends it to the claiming bank with a coded reason for not paying and what it is doing with the claim. It was added in the November 2018 category 7 release.

What MT744 is used for
Under the bank-to-bank reimbursement flow, the issuing bank authorises the reimbursing bank with an MT740 and the paying or negotiating bank claims with an MT742. When the claim does not match the authorisation, for example a claim for more than the authorised amount, the reimbursing bank sends an MT744 instead of paying.
Field 73R gives the reason for non-payment and field 73S the disposal of the claim, each as a code with optional text, so the claiming bank can correct and resend the claim or take it up with the issuing bank.

No ISO 20022 equivalent in general use. Documentary credit messages in category 7 were not part of the November 2025 move of cross-border payment instructions to ISO 20022 and are still exchanged as MT on Swift.
