MT320 Fixed Loan/Deposit Confirmation

Written and maintained by ZagTrader. Last reviewed . How this page is sourced and checked

The MT320 is the Swift message the two parties to a fixed-term money market loan or deposit send each other to confirm its terms: principal, interest rate, value and maturity dates, interest amount and where each payment goes. The same message type confirms the original deal, each rollover and the final maturity, distinguished by field 22B.

When MT320 is used

The MT320 is exchanged between party A and party B, the institutions or corporates that agreed a fixed-term loan or deposit: for example a bank placing surplus dollars with another bank for three months. Each side sends its own confirmation to the other, or one acts for a client (94A AGNT), or a money broker confirms to both (94A BROK). Field 17R says whether party A is the lender (L) or the borrower (B). The cash moves separately, usually by MT202, quoting the common reference 22C in field 21.

One message type covers the whole life of the deal through two fields. Field 22B gives the event: CONF for the first confirmation, ROLL for each rollover or renewal and MATU for repayment at maturity. Field 22A gives the function: NEWT for a new message, AMND to replace one, CANC to cancel one, DUPL for a duplicate. A deal is confirmed with NEWT/CONF, each renewal with NEWT/ROLL and the end with NEWT/MATU; an error in any of them is fixed with AMND or CANC and the same 22B. Field 21N, party A’s contract number, stays the same throughout so the events can be linked.

Amounts follow party A’s point of view. Field 32B is the principal (new principal on a rollover). Field 34E is the interest for the period: unsigned when party A pays it, with N when party A receives it, so a lender’s confirmation carries N. Field 32H is what actually moves on a rollover or maturity: the increase or decrease in principal, plus interest when it settles in the same payment, again unsigned when party A pays and with N when it receives. On a new confirmation 32H is not allowed and 30X (next interest date) is mandatory; on maturity 32H is mandatory and 30X is not allowed.

Interest paid before maturity is described by 30F (first or next interest payment date) and 38J (the period after it, in days or months). Field 14D gives the day count (ACT/360, ACT/365, AFI/365, 360/360 or 30E/360). Field 22C is built like the MT300 common reference, except that the four digits come from the interest rate in 37G: a rate of 4,35 gives 0435.

Settlement is split by who pays. Sequence C says where party B receives what party A pays, sequence D where party A receives what party B pays. Sequences E and F are only used when interest settles differently from principal. Each has 53a (where the funds come from), 56a and 86a (one or two intermediaries; 86a only with 56a), 57a (receiving agent) and 58a (beneficiary institution). Option A with a BIC is preferred; the standard’s guidelines show codes such as SSI, NET or UNKNOWN in 57D for standing instructions, netting or details not yet known. Sequence G adds withholding tax, sequence H non-matched information such as the broker, and sequence I additional amounts such as fees.

Call and notice deposits, which have no fixed maturity, use the MT330 instead. An interest payment advice for a loan or deposit is the MT350, and a third party (for example a fund manager’s custodian) is instructed to settle with the MT321.

Combined with 22A: NEWT/CONF, then optionally AMND/CONF or CANC/CONF, then NEWT/ROLL for each rollover, then NEWT/MATU.
22CCommon ReferenceM4!a2!c4!n4!a2!cThe common key of both confirmations: the sender’s and receiver’s BICs without the country code, in alphabetical order, around four digits from the interest rate in 37G (the rightmost non-zero digit and the three digits to its left, zero filled; 0000 for a zero rate).

Rules worth knowing

  • Field 21 is optional only with 22B CONF and 22A NEWT; it is mandatory in every other combination (rule C1, error D70).
  • Field 21N is mandatory when 94A is AGNT (rule C2, error D72).
  • Field 32H is not allowed with CONF and mandatory with MATU and ROLL; field 30X is mandatory with CONF and ROLL and not allowed with MATU (rule C3, error D56).
  • On a maturity (MATU), 32H must be negative or zero when party A is the lender (17R L) and positive or zero when it is the borrower (rule C4, error D57). A zero amount carries no sign (T14).
  • Field 30F is not allowed with MATU (rule C5, error D69). When 30F is present, 38J is mandatory, and without 30F it is not allowed (rule C6, error D60).
  • In sequences C, D, E, F and I, 86a is only allowed when 56a is present (rule C7, error E35).
  • Sequence H, with 88a, is mandatory when 94A is BROK; 71F is only allowed with BROK (rule C8, error D74). If present, sequence H must contain at least one field besides 15H (C98).
  • The currency in 32B, 32H, 34E and 71F must be the same (rule C9, error C02).
  • Field 22C: sender’s and receiver’s BIC codes in alphabetical order (T95, T96) around four digits from 37G, or 0000 for a zero rate (T22).

Common errors and rejects

  1. Field 21 missing on a rollover or maturity (D70)

Only a brand new confirmation (NEWT/CONF) may omit field 21. A rollover, maturity, amendment or cancellation must quote field 20 of the previous confirmation in the chain.

  2. 32H or 30X in the wrong event (D56)

A first confirmation (CONF) must not carry 32H and must carry 30X. A maturity (MATU) must carry 32H and must not carry 30X. A rollover needs both. These errors usually come from a template reused across events.

  3. Wrong sign on the amount to be settled (D57)

From party A’s point of view, a lender receives the repayment at maturity, so 32H carries N; a borrower pays it, so no sign. The same logic applies to 34E. A zero amount must not carry N (T14).

  4. Interest period fields inconsistent (D60, D69)

30F and 38J go together: one without the other is rejected. Neither belongs on a maturity confirmation.

  5. Currency mismatch between amount fields (C02)

Principal (32B), amount to be settled (32H), interest (34E) and broker’s commission (71F) must all be in the currency of the loan or deposit.

  6. Second intermediary without first (E35)

Field 86a only makes sense when 56a is also given in the same settlement sequence. Move the institution to 56a or add the missing intermediary.

ISO 20022

Swift’s MT and MX equivalence tables (May 2024) list no ISO 20022 equivalent for the MT320. Treasury confirmations (category 3) were not part of the CBPR+ migration of cross-border payment instructions that ended on 22 November 2025, and the MT320 remains in use on FIN.

The payments that settle the deposit are separate: cross-border MT202 transfers are now exchanged as pacs.009, and statements that show the movements can be MT950 or camt.053.

MT320 questions

What is an MT320?
The Swift Fixed Loan/Deposit Confirmation. The two parties to a fixed-term money market loan or deposit send it to each other to confirm principal, rate, dates, interest and settlement instructions, and again for each rollover and at maturity.
What do 22A and 22B mean in an MT320?
22B is the event (CONF first confirmation, ROLL rollover, MATU maturity) and 22A the function of the message (NEWT, AMND, CANC, DUPL). A normal life is NEWT/CONF, then NEWT/ROLL for each renewal, then NEWT/MATU.
Why is the interest amount in 34E negative?
Amounts are shown from party A’s point of view: no sign when party A pays, N when it receives. A lender receives interest, so its 34E starts with N.
What is the difference between MT320 and MT330?
The MT320 confirms a loan or deposit with a fixed maturity date. The MT330 confirms a call or notice loan or deposit, which runs until one party gives notice.
How is the common reference 22C built in an MT320?
Like the MT300 reference, but the four digits come from the interest rate in 37G: the rightmost non-zero digit and the three digits before it, zero filled, or 0000 for a zero rate.
