MT524 Intra-Position Instruction

Written and maintained by ZagTrader. Last reviewed . How this page is sourced and checked

The MT524 is sent by an account owner to its account servicer to move securities from one sub-balance to another within the same holding, re-registration being a typical example. The sender may be a global custodian with an account at its sub-custodian, or an investment manager or broker-dealer with an account at its custodian.

What MT524 is used for

Sequence B (Intra-Position Details) carries the safekeeping account, the security, the quantity to move (36B::SETT), the settlement date and the two balances in field 93A: :93A::FROM// for the sub-balance the securities leave and :93A::TOBA// for the one they join. Balance codes include AVAI (available), BLOK (blocked), PLED (pledged), COLA (eligible for collateral), NOMI (registered) and UNRG (unregistered).

Field 23G is NEWM for a new instruction and CANC to cancel one. The servicer confirms each executed movement with an MT508 and summarises them over a period in an MT538. The securities stay in the same account, so the MT524 is not a substitute for a delivery instruction such as an MT542.

Swift’s equivalence tables map the MT524 to semt.013 (intra-position movement instruction), with sese.020 for the cancellation request.

MT524 questions

What does 93A FROM and TOBA mean in an MT524?
FROM is the sub-balance the securities are taken from and TOBA the sub-balance they move to, both inside the same safekeeping account. For example, FROM AVAI and TOBA BLOK blocks securities that were available.
How is an MT524 confirmed?
With an MT508 Intra-Position Advice for each movement. A list of movements over a period comes in the MT538.
