MT752 Authorisation to Pay, Accept or Negotiate

Written and maintained by ZagTrader. Last reviewed . How this page is sourced and checked

The MT752 is the Swift message an issuing bank sends to the bank holding documents under a documentary credit to say it may pay, accept or negotiate them despite the discrepancies, provided they are otherwise in order. It is usually the answer to an MT750 Advice of Discrepancy and tells the receiver how it will be paid: by claiming reimbursement, by debiting the issuing bank’s account, or by a remittance.

When MT752 is used

The MT752 closes the loop that an MT750 opens. A nominated bank received documents under a credit, found discrepancies and asked the issuing bank whether it may take them up. The issuing bank asks its customer, the applicant, whether it accepts the discrepancies. If the applicant agrees, the issuing bank sends an MT752 to the presenting bank. The request does not have to come by MT750: the message may also answer a request made another way, such as by MT799.

It can also come from a nominated bank, when the issuing bank has authorised that bank to act for it, and go to the bank that is to pay, accept or negotiate.

Field 23 says what kind of authorisation it is. ACCEPT authorises the receiver to accept a draft. NEGOTIATE authorises negotiation where the credit gave no reimbursement instructions. REIMBURSE tells the receiver it may now claim reimbursement, typically from the reimbursing bank named in the credit with an MT742. DEBIT authorises the receiver to debit the issuing bank’s account it holds. REMITTED tells it the issuing bank has paid, or will pay, the money itself. With DEBIT and REMITTED the net amount and value date go in field 33A.

Fields 32B, 71D and 33a carry the amounts: the total the presenting bank advised (usually field 34B of its MT750), any charges the issuing bank deducts (for example the discrepancy fee announced in the credit), and the net amount to be remitted or claimed. Fields 53a and 54a show the route of the money when it does not go over the single direct account between the two banks.

If the issuing bank does not accept the documents, it does not send an MT752. A negative reply to an MT750 is usually an MT796, and a refusal of documents presented to the issuing bank itself is an MT734.

MT752 format: sequences and fields

Message text (block 4)Mandatory

The MT752 has no sequences: block 4 is one list of fields in the order of the SR 2025 structure. Older templates use 71B and 72 (x character set) and have no 79Z.

TagNameStatusFormatMeaning
20Documentary Credit NumberM16xThe credit number assigned by the issuing bank, the same as field 20 of the MT700 and field 21 of the MT750. It must not start or end with a slash or contain two slashes in a row.
21Presenting Bank's ReferenceM16xThe receiver’s own reference for the presentation, normally field 20 of its MT750. This is what lets the presenting bank match the authorisation to the documents it holds.
23Further IdentificationM16xWhat the receiver is authorised to do, as a code: ACCEPT, DEBIT, NEGOTIATE, REIMBURSE or REMITTED (see the code list below).
30Date of Advice of Discrepancy or MailingM6!nThe date (YYMMDD) on which the advice of discrepancy being answered was sent, electronically or by mail. For a reply to an MT750, the date that MT750 was sent.
32BTotal Amount AdvisedO3!a15dThe total amount the presenting bank advised, for example field 34B of its MT750.
71DCharges DeductedO6*35zCharges the issuing bank deducts from the total advised, such as a discrepancy fee, one per line with a code between slashes and the currency and amount, for example /COMM/USD100,00.
33aNet AmountOptions A or BCA: 6!n3!a15d B: 3!a15dThe net amount that was or will be remitted, or that may be claimed. Option A adds a value date and must be used when 23 is REMITTED (date of the remittance) or DEBIT (date the issuing bank’s account is to be debited). It must be present when both 32B and 71D are present.
53aSender's CorrespondentOptions A, B or DOA: [/1!a][/34x] 4!a2!a2!c[3!c] B: [/1!a][/34x] [35x] D: [/1!a][/34x] 4*35xWhere required, the account or branch of the sender, or another bank, through which the sender will reimburse the receiver.

72ZSender to Receiver InformationO6*35zInstructions or extra information for the receiver, for example from which bank to claim reimbursement. The code RCB (receiver’s correspondent bank) followed by a bank may be used only when both 53a and 54a are present.
79ZNarrativeO35*50zLonger free text, for example conditions attached to the authorisation or a note that the applicant has accepted the listed discrepancies.

Format notation: n digits, a upper-case letters, c upper-case letters and digits, x any character of the Swift character set, d a decimal number with a comma, ! fixed length, [ ] optional, 4*35x up to 4 lines of 35 characters. M mandatory, O optional, C conditional (a rule decides).

Rules worth knowing

  • If 32B and 71D are both present, 33a must be present (rule C1 in the handbook, error code C18, given there for 71B).
  • The currency in 32B and 33a must be the same (error C02).
  • When field 23 is REMITTED or DEBIT, field 33a must use option A, with the value date of the remittance or of the debit.
  • The code RCB in 72Z may be used only when both 53a and 54a are present. Without 53a and 54a, the single direct account relationship between the two banks in the currency of the credit is used.
  • Fields 20 and 21 must not start or end with a slash and must not contain two consecutive slashes (error T26).
  • The MT752 authorises taking up documents that are otherwise in order. It is not an amendment of the credit: changing the terms of the credit itself needs an MT707.

MT752 example

This answers the MT750 example. ZagTrader Test Bank, Dubai (ZAGTAEADXXX) issued credit ZTLC2610200001. BANKGB2LXXX advised discrepancies on 10 November 2026 for a net USD 248,150.00 under its reference BGLX2611100045. The applicant, Gulf Trading LLC, accepts the discrepancies. The issuing bank deducts the USD 100.00 discrepancy fee announced in field 47A of the credit and authorises BANKGB2LXXX to pay and claim reimbursement from the reimbursing bank named in the credit, ZAGTGB2LXXX.

With 23 REMITTED the issuing bank would instead send 33A with the value date of its own payment, for example :33A:261113USD248050,00.

Common errors and rejects

  1. 33a missing when 32B and 71D are present (C18)

If the sender states the advised total and deducts charges, it must also give the resulting net amount in 33a.

  2. Option B in 33a with REMITTED or DEBIT

A remittance or a debit has a value date, so 33a must be option A (:33A: with date, currency and amount). Option B is for authorisations without a payment date, such as REIMBURSE.

  3. Currency in 33a differs from 32B (C02)

The net amount must be in the same currency as the total advised. Convert any charges taken in another currency before deducting them.

  4. Code in 23 not recognised

Field 23 takes one of the codes ACCEPT, DEBIT, NEGOTIATE, REIMBURSE or REMITTED, in capitals. Words such as PAY or AUTHORISED are not codes; explain special arrangements in 72Z or 79Z.

  5. Wrong reference in field 21

Field 21 must carry the presenting bank’s reference (field 20 of its MT750), not the credit number. Otherwise the presenting bank cannot match the authorisation to the documents it holds.

ISO 20022

There is no ISO 20022 equivalent of the MT752: Swift’s MT and MX equivalence tables (May 2024 edition) list none for it. Category 7 trade finance messages were not part of the November 2025 end of MT/MX coexistence for cross-border payment instructions, so authorisations to pay are still exchanged in MT format.

The payment it leads to is ISO 20022, however: a reimbursement or remittance between banks moves as a pacs.009 on Swift today.

MT752 questions

What is an MT752?
It is the Authorisation to Pay, Accept or Negotiate: the issuing bank’s message telling the bank holding documents under a letter of credit that it may take them up despite the discrepancies, and how it will be paid.
Is an MT752 always a reply to an MT750?
Usually, but not always. It answers a request for authorisation made by MT750 or by other means, such as a free format MT799.
What does REIMBURSE in field 23 mean?
That the receiver may now pay and claim reimbursement, usually from the reimbursing bank named in the credit with an MT742. DEBIT means it may debit the issuing bank’s account it holds, and REMITTED that the issuing bank pays the money itself.
What is the difference between MT752 and MT756?
The MT752 gives permission to take up discrepant documents. The MT756 advises that a drawing has been reimbursed or paid, where the credit gave no specific reimbursement instructions.
Does an MT752 amend the credit?
No. It covers one presentation with known discrepancies. A change to the credit terms themselves is made with an MT707 amendment.
