MT547 Deliver Against Payment Confirmation

Written and maintained by ZagTrader. Last reviewed . How this page is sourced and checked

The MT547 is the settlement confirmation for a sale: it tells the account owner that securities have left its safekeeping account against payment, how many settled, on which date and how much cash was credited. The account servicer (custodian, sub-custodian or CSD participant) sends it to the account owner once the delivery has settled, in answer to the account owner’s MT543 instruction.

When MT547 is used

The seller’s side sends its custodian an MT543 Deliver Against Payment. The custodian reports acceptance, matching and any pending reason in MT548, and when the CSD has moved the securities to the buyer and credited the cash, it sends the MT547. The account owner books the sale proceeds and removes the position on this message.

The 20C::SEME of the MT543 comes back in 20C::RELA, usually with :13A::LINK//543. Extra LINK blocks can carry the CSD or T2S reference (MITI) and the common reference (COMM).

Deliveries are where partial settlement happens most, because the seller may hold only part of the quantity on the settlement date. In markets that allow it, the CSD settles what is available and the custodian sends one MT547 per part: 22F::PARS//PAIN while some quantity is still open, PARC on the last part. 36B::ESTT and 19A::ESTT give the quantity and the cash of the current part; 36B::RSTT and 19A::RSTT may show what is still open, which also stays visible as pending in MT548.

If a confirmation was wrong (wrong account, wrong quantity, sent twice), the account servicer sends a new MT547 with 23G CANC and the old SEME in 20C::PREV, usually followed by a corrected NEWM. If the settlement itself is undone after it was confirmed, for example a contractual settlement that the market never completed or a booking the CSD unwound, it sends 23G RVSL with the same PREV link. After a reversal the instruction is open again and its status comes back in MT548. Reverse your own booking on RVSL; on CANC, wait for the replacement.

The four settlement confirmations share one layout and differ only in direction and payment: MT544 receive free, MT545 receive against payment, MT546 deliver free and MT547 deliver against payment. The against payment pair must carry the settled cash amount (19A::ESTT); for the free pair the amount sequence is optional. Receipts name the delivering agent (DEAG) as counterparty, deliveries the receiving agent (REAG).

MT547 format: sequences and fields

Sequence AGeneral InformationMandatory

Identifies the confirmation, says whether it is new, a cancellation or a reversal, and flags partial settlement or pre-confirmation.

TagQualifierNameStatusFormatMeaning
16RStart of blockMGENLOpens the General Information block.
20CSEMESender's Message ReferenceM:4!c//16xThe account servicer’s own reference for this confirmation. Each partial confirmation gets its own SEME. A later cancellation or reversal quotes it in 20C::PREV.
23GFunction of the MessageM4!c[/4!c]NEWM for a new confirmation, CANC to cancel a confirmation sent in error, RVSL to reverse a confirmation whose settlement has been undone. An optional subfunction marks a COPY for a third party, a DUPL (duplicate re-send) or CODU (copy of a duplicate).
98aPREPPreparation Date/TimeOA: :4!c//8!n C: :4!c//8!n6!n E: :4!c//8!n6!n[,3n][/[N]2!n[2!n]]When the account servicer produced the message. Useful to order messages that arrive close together.
22FPARSPartial Settlement IndicatorO:4!c/[8c]/4!cPresent only when the confirmation covers part of the instruction. PAIN: part of the instruction is still open and more confirmations will follow. PARC: this is the last part and nothing more will settle.
22HPRECPre-Confirmation IndicatorO:4!c//4!cMarks a pre-confirmation: PRCA when the cash movement is confirmed before the securities move, PRSE when the securities movement is confirmed before the cash. Mainly seen with against payment settlement.

Rules worth knowing

  • Sequence A1 is mandatory, and 20C::RELA must be present in exactly one LINK block (error code C73). Use NONREF when the movement was not instructed by message.
  • If 23G is CANC or RVSL, 20C::PREV must be present in exactly one LINK block, carrying the SEME of the confirmation being cancelled or reversed; with NEWM it is not used (error code E08).
  • 36B::ESTT may appear at most twice in sequence C, and then one occurrence must use FAMT and the other AMOR (error code C71).
  • Unless 22F::DBNM is present in sequence E, one E1 block must carry 95a::REAG and another 95a::PSET (error code E91). A block with 95a::PSET must not carry 97a::SAFE (error code E52).
  • A party qualifier may appear only once in the message (error code E84), and each side of the chain must be complete: DEI2 needs DEI1, DEI1 needs DECU, DECU needs SELL; REI2 needs REI1, REI1 needs RECU, RECU needs BUYR (error code E86).
  • Exactly one E3 block must carry 19A::ESTT (error code E92), and no amount qualifier may appear in more than one E3 block (error code E87).
  • 98a::VALU may only appear in the E3 block that carries 19A::ESTT (error code C28). If 92B::EXCH is present, 19A::RESU must be in the same block, and RESU is not allowed without EXCH (error code E62).
  • Market practice for partial settlement (SMPG): 22F::PARS//PAIN on every partial confirmation except the last, PARC on the last one. 36B::ESTT always gives the quantity of the current part; PSTT and RSTT are optional.
  • A cancellation (CANC) repeats at least the mandatory fields of the confirmation it cancels.

MT547 example

ZAGTAEADXXX sold 10,000 shares and instructed the delivery with an MT543 referenced ZT2610200123. On 22 October 2026 only 6,000 shares were available, so the CSD settled 6,000 against AED 152,700.00 and the custodian CUSTAEADXXX confirms that first part. The same instruction appears pending with LACK in the MT548 example.

When the remaining 4,000 shares settle, a second MT547 follows with a new SEME, the same RELA, :22F::PARS//PARC, :36B::ESTT//UNIT/4000, and :19A::ESTT//AED101800,.

All BICs, references, accounts and the ISIN are made up; the ISIN has a valid check digit.

Common errors and rejects

  1. Only part of the sale settled

Look for 22F::PARS//PAIN and 36B::RSTT. Book the settled part, keep the rest open, and check the MT548 for the remainder: usually LACK, where you need to deliver securities, or a buy-in risk if it keeps failing.

    How to fix it
  2. Cash credited differs from the expected proceeds

Compare 19A::ESTT with the 19A::SETT you instructed. Small differences come from market tolerance; larger ones from charges, taxes or accrued interest shown in other E3 blocks.

  3. No MT547 on the settlement date

The sale has not settled. In MT548, LACK means your account is short, CMON that the buyer lacks cash, NMAT that the buyer’s instruction is missing or different.

    How to fix it
  4. Sale confirmation reversed (23G RVSL)

Usually a contractual settlement that the market did not complete. Put the position back, reverse the cash and follow the instruction in MT548 again.

  5. Network reject on an MT547 (E92, E08, C71)

For account servicers: one E3 block must carry 19A::ESTT (E92); CANC and RVSL need exactly one 20C::PREV (E08); 36B::ESTT may repeat only as FAMT plus AMOR (C71).

MT547 in ISO 20022

The ISO 20022 equivalent is sese.025 with TxIdDtls/SctiesMvmntTp = DELI and TxIdDtls/Pmt = APMT. The RELA reference becomes TxIdDtls/AcctOwnrTxId, 98A::ESET becomes TradDtls/FctvSttlmDt, and 22F::PARS maps to AddtlParams/PrtlSttlm with the same PAIN and PARC codes. Reversals use sese.026; statuses before settlement use sese.024.

The MT547 remains in use on FIN, since securities messages were not part of the November 2025 payments deadline. T2S and its directly connected participants use sese.025.

MT547 questions

What is the difference between MT545 and MT547?
The MT545 confirms a receipt against payment (a purchase), the MT547 a delivery against payment (a sale). They answer an MT541 and an MT543.
How do I know an MT547 is a partial settlement?
It carries 22F::PARS//PAIN in sequence A, and often 36B::RSTT for the quantity still open. The final part carries PARC.
Which reference links the MT547 to my MT543?
20C::RELA in the linkage sequence: it holds the 20C::SEME of your MT543.
