MT516 Securities Loan Confirmation
Written and maintained by ZagTrader. Last reviewed . How this page is sourced and checked
The MT516 is exchanged between two financial institutions involved in securities lending to confirm the details of a new loan, a partial recall or partial return of securities on loan, or the close-out of a loan. It is the usual confirmation for actions requested with an MT526, where the parties have agreed to use it.

What MT516 is used for
Unlike the ISO 15022 messages with 16R and 16S blocks, the MT516 keeps the older layout: a reference (20), a further identification (23), the date the loan, recall or return was agreed (31P), the security (35B) and the effective date (30), followed by optional collateral arrangements (cash collateral, rebate rate, collateral securities) and free text. The movement of the securities themselves is instructed separately with settlement messages such as MT540 to MT543.
Swift standards maintenance papers published on iso20022.org list a change request to remove the MT516 and MT526 from the Swift network. Both were still part of the SR 2025 standard; check the current release guide before building a new flow on them.

This is a catalogue entry: the field-by-field structure is not shown here because we publish structures only where we have checked them against public sources. Paste an MT516 into the parser to see each field decoded with its tag, name and value.
ISO 20022
Swift’s MT and MX equivalence tables list no ISO 20022 equivalent for the MT516.
