MT801 T/C Multiple Sales Advice

Written and maintained by ZagTrader. Last reviewed . How this page is sourced and checked

The MT801 reports sales of travellers cheques to the issuer of the cheques. A bank that sells the cheques as selling agent sends it to the issuer with the purchase agreements, serial numbers and face amounts sold, when the data is long or covers several selling agents; the settlement of the money follows separately in an MT802.

What MT801 is used for

For each selling agent the message lists the purchase agreements sold, with the sales date, the cheque serial numbers and the face amount, and then the total amount for that selling agent and its number of purchase agreements. Field 28 numbers the settlement and the page when the advice runs over several messages.

Travellers cheques have largely given way to cards, so the message is rarely seen today, but it remains part of the Swift standard.

ISO 20022

No ISO 20022 equivalent: Swift’s MT and MX equivalence tables list none for the travellers cheque messages, and category 8 was not part of the November 2025 payments migration.
