MT530 Transaction Processing Command

Written and maintained by ZagTrader. Last reviewed . How this page is sourced and checked

The MT530 is sent by an account owner to its account servicer, usually a participant to its CSD or ICSD, to change a processing indicator or other non-matching information on a settlement instruction already sent. In markets without pre-settlement matching it is also how a party approves, cancels or rejects a transaction instructed by its counterparty.

What MT530 is used for

Typical uses are putting an instruction on hold or releasing it, releasing part of a quantity, changing the priority, linking or unlinking instructions and changing the partial settlement indicator. The instruction to change is identified in sequence B (Request Details), for example by its original reference in 20C::PREV. Matching fields such as the quantity or the settlement date cannot be changed this way: cancel and re-instruct with a new MT540 to MT543.

The servicer answers in an MT548 with the processing status of the request. Clearstream Europe’s guide, for example, reports an accepted request as TPRC PACK, a rejected one as REJT and a denied one as DEND, accepts only one change per MT530 and reports the updated instruction in a separate MT548. Supported changes and codes differ between servicers, so check yours.

This is a catalogue entry: the field-by-field structure is not shown here because we publish structures only where we have checked them against public sources. Paste an MT530 into the parser to see each field decoded with its tag, name and value.

MT530 in ISO 20022

Swift’s equivalence tables map the MT530 to sese.030 (securities settlement conditions modification request); the ISO 20022 reply to it is sese.031 (settlement condition modification status advice).

MT530 questions

Can I amend the quantity or settlement date with an MT530?
No. The MT530 changes processing attributes that are not matched, such as hold, priority or partial settlement. To change a matching field, cancel the instruction and send a new one.
How do I know an MT530 worked?
Watch for the MT548 that reports the processing status of your request: accepted (PACK), rejected (REJT) or denied (DEND), with a reason when it fails.
Is there an ISO 20022 equivalent of the MT530?
Yes: sese.030, the securities settlement conditions modification request, used for example in T2S to hold and release instructions.
