MT210 Notice to Receive

Written and maintained by ZagTrader. Last reviewed . How this page is sourced and checked

The MT210 is the message an account owner sends to the bank that keeps its account to say that funds are on their way and should be credited to that account. It gives the value date, the amount, who is paying and the reference the incoming payment will carry, so the account servicer can match the money when it arrives. Its ISO 20022 equivalent is camt.057 Notification to Receive.

When MT210 is used

An MT210 is an advance notice. The Sender is the account owner, or a party it has authorised, and the Receiver is the institution that services the account. It says: on this value date you will receive this amount for my account, from this payer, quoting this reference. Nothing moves because of an MT210; the money arrives separately, usually as an MT202, MT205 or pacs.009 sent by the payer’s side.

Banks send MT210s to their nostro agents when they expect money from a counterparty: the other leg of an FX deal, the repayment of a money market placement, a maturing deposit. The common reference of the deal goes in field 21, because the payer will quote the same reference in field 21 of its transfer, and the account servicer matches on it. Corporates, fund managers and brokers also use the MT210 to pre-advise their bank of incoming customer or trade receipts.

One MT210 can announce up to ten expected receipts, all for the same value date (field 30) and in the same currency. Each repetitive sequence names either the paying institution (52a) or, when the payer is not a financial institution, the ordering customer (50a), plus optionally the intermediary from which the funds will come (56a).

Some market infrastructures use the MT210 as an instruction in its own right. In Australia, for example, the Austraclear settlement system publishes a usage guideline for an MT210 Cash Receipt that its participants send to announce money they expect to receive.

The confirmation comes the other way: once the funds are credited, the account servicer may send an MT910 and the credit appears on the MT950 or MT940 statement. To withdraw a notice that is no longer valid, the account owner sends an MT292 request for cancellation.

MT210 format: sequences and fields

Non-repetitive partMandatory

Fields that apply to the whole notice. There are no lettered sequences in the MT210.

TagNameStatusFormatMeaning
20Transaction Reference NumberM16xThe Sender’s reference for this notice. No leading or trailing slash and no double slash (T26). An MT292 that cancels the notice quotes it in field 21.
25Account IdentificationO35xThe account to credit with the incoming funds. Used when the Receiver services more than one account for the Sender.
30Value DateM6!nThe value date (YYMMDD) of all the receipts announced in the message. Expected receipts for different dates need separate MT210s.

Repetitive sequence: one per expected receiptMandatory, repeatable

Appears once per expected receipt, at most ten times (C1). Either 50a or 52a, not both, in each occurrence (C2).

TagNameStatusFormatMeaning
21Related ReferenceM16xField 20 or another reference of the related transaction, for example the common reference of an FX deal. Use the reference the payer will quote in field 21 of its transfer, so the funds can be matched.
32BCurrency Code, AmountM3!a15dCurrency and amount expected, with a comma as the decimal mark. The currency must be the same in every occurrence (C3, error C02), and metal codes such as XAU are not allowed (C08).
50aOrdering CustomerOptions no letter, C or FCNo letter: 4*35x C: 4!a2!a2!c[3!c] F: 35x 4*(1!n/33x)The payer when it is not a financial institution. Option C takes a non-financial institution BIC (E57); option F uses an account or identifier on the first line and numbered lines 1/ (name), 2/ (address) and 3/ (country and town).
52aOrdering InstitutionOptions A or DCA: [/1!a][/34x] 4!a2!a2!c[3!c] D: [/1!a][/34x] 4*35xThe payer when it is a financial institution, for example the counterparty of an FX deal. When the Sender itself is paying (moving funds from another account), it repeats its own BIC here. Option A preferred.
56aIntermediaryOptions A or DOA: [/1!a][/34x] 4!a2!a2!c[3!c] D: [/1!a][/34x] 4*35xThe financial institution from which the Receiver will receive the funds, when it is not the ordering party itself, for example the payer’s correspondent.

Format notation: n digits, a upper-case letters, c upper-case letters and digits, x any character of the Swift character set, d a decimal number with a comma, ! fixed length, [ ] optional, 4*35x up to 4 lines of 35 characters. M mandatory, O optional, C conditional (a rule decides).

Rules worth knowing

  • The repetitive sequence must not appear more than ten times (network rule C1, error T10).
  • In each repetitive sequence, either field 50a or field 52a must be present, but not both (rule C2, error C06).
  • The currency code must be the same in every field 32B of the message (rule C3, error C02).
  • Field 30 gives one value date for all the receipts in the message.
  • The MT210 is not used for commodities. To notify the receipt of commodities such as precious metals, the MT605 is used.
  • In option F of field 50a, the numbered lines must start with 1/, be in numerical order and include a 3/ line with a valid ISO country code (T56, T73).
  • An MT210 is a notice, not an instruction to pay. It does not cause a debit anywhere; the payer still has to send the funds.

MT210 example

ZagTrader Test Bank, Dubai (ZAGTAEADXXX), expects three USD receipts on 22 October 2026 on its USD account 0012345678 with BANKUS33XXX in New York: the USD legs of two FX deals with BANKGB2LXXX and BANKDEFFXXX, and a payment from its corporate client Northwind Trading LLC, which pays through its bank CUSTUS33XXX. It pre-advises all three in one MT210.

BICs, names, account numbers and references are made up.

Under J.P. Morgan’s ISO 20022 practice each expected receipt would be a separate camt.057; the MT210 allows up to ten in one message.

Common errors and rejects

  1. More than ten receipts in one message (T10)

The repetitive sequence may appear at most ten times. Split larger batches into several MT210s.

  2. Both 50a and 52a, or neither, in an item (C06)

Each expected receipt names exactly one payer: 52a when it is a financial institution, 50a when it is not. Remove one, or add the missing payer.

  3. Different currencies in one notice (C02)

All occurrences of 32B must share one currency. Send one MT210 per currency (and one per value date, since field 30 covers the whole message).

  4. Wrong kind of BIC for the payer (E57, C05)

Option C of 50a needs a BIC of a non-financial institution, while 52a and 56a need a financial institution BIC. A bank in 50C, or a corporate in 52A, is rejected.

    How to fix it
  5. Funds arrive but are not matched to the notice

The account servicer matches on reference, amount, value date and payer. If field 21 does not carry the reference the payer quotes in its transfer, or the amount differs, the receipt and the notice stay apart and the funds may be queried or held. Agree the common reference with the counterparty and use it in both messages.

  6. Notice for a precious metals receipt

The MT210 is for money. Metal codes such as XAU are refused (C08); receipts of commodities are notified with the MT605.

MT210 in ISO 20022

The ISO 20022 equivalent is camt.057 Notification to Receive, shown in J.P. Morgan’s ISO 20022 mapping guide as camt.057.001.06 under the cross-border usage rules (CBPR+). In J.P. Morgan’s mapping, field 20 becomes the message identification, 25 the account, 30 the expected value date, 21 the item identification, 32B the item amount, 50a the debtor and 56A the intermediary agent; each item can also carry the UETR of the expected payment.

The MT210 is a notification, not a payment instruction, so the end of coexistence for payment instructions on 22 November 2025 did not apply to it. J.P. Morgan says it will keep accepting MT210 messages until 2028, and Clearstream tells its clients they may continue to send MT210s until the end of the coexistence period in November 2028. J.P. Morgan accepts only one advice per camt.057, where an MT210 may hold up to ten.

Cancelling a notice to receive is an MT292 in MT and camt.058 Notification to Receive Cancellation Advice in ISO 20022.

MT210 questions

What is an MT210?
An advance notice from an account owner to the bank that keeps its account, saying that funds will arrive on a given value date, from a given payer, and should be credited to the account.
Who sends an MT210 and to whom?
The account owner, or a party it has authorised, sends it to its account servicing institution: for example a bank to its nostro agent, or a company or fund manager to its bank.
What is the difference between MT210 and MT910?
The MT210 comes before the money: the account owner announces a receipt it expects. The MT910 comes after: the account servicer confirms that it has credited the account.
Can one MT210 announce several payments?
Yes, up to ten, as long as they have the same value date (field 30) and the same currency. Each one has its own reference, amount and payer.
How do I cancel an MT210?
Send an MT292 request for cancellation to the same account servicer, quoting the MT210’s field 20 in field 21 and MT 210 with its send date in field 11S. See MTn92.
What is the ISO 20022 equivalent of MT210?
camt.057 Notification to Receive. A cancellation of the notice is camt.058.
