MD01 means no mandate in the ISO 20022 return reason code set. There is no valid mandate for the direct debit, or the mandate data in the collection does not match what the debtor bank holds.

What it means in practice
In a pacs.004 payment return, a return reason code explains why funds that were already settled are being sent back. It sits in TxInf/RtrRsnInf/Rsn/Cd, and bank statements (camt.053, camt.054) repeat it in RtrInf/Rsn/Cd.
There is no valid mandate for the direct debit, or the mandate data in the collection does not match what the debtor bank holds.
What to do
- Check the mandate reference and signature date with the debtor, and do not collect again until the mandate is in place.
