Official definition

Account number specified has been closed on the bank of account's books.

Definition from the ISO 20022 External Code Sets, 2Q2026 (published 28 Aug 2026).

What it means in practice

In a pacs.002 or pain.002 status report, a status reason code explains why a payment instruction was rejected (RJCT) or why it has another status. It sits in TxInfAndSts/StsRsnInf/Rsn/Cd.

The account exists in the bank's records but has been closed. The number itself is correct, which is why format checks do not catch it.

Some banks cannot disclose that an account is closed for data protection reasons and send a more general code such as MS03 instead.

What to do

  • Contact the beneficiary for new account details before you pay again.
  • Update or block the stored beneficiary record so that standing orders and batch payments stop using the closed account.
  • If the payment was returned with a pacs.004, reconcile the returned amount, which may be lower than the original if charges were deducted.
