Official definition
Cancellation requested following a transaction that was originated fraudulently. The use of the FraudulentOrigin code should be governed by jurisdictions.
What it means in practice
In a camt.056 cancellation request (or camt.055 from a customer), a cancellation reason code explains why the sender asks for a payment to be stopped or its funds returned. It sits in Undrlyg/TxInf/CxlRsnInf/Rsn/Cd.
The payment was initiated by fraud, for example after an account takeover or an invoice redirection. As a cancellation reason it asks the receiving bank to stop and send back the funds.
What to do
- Send the request as quickly as possible and follow your fraud process. Recovery depends on whether the funds are still in the beneficiary account and on the rules of the jurisdiction.
