AWMO: Awaiting Money

Written and maintained by ZagTrader. Last reviewed . How this page is sourced and checked

AWMO tells you that the securities leg of your delivery has already moved but the payment from the counterparty is still outstanding. It appears where the securities and cash legs do not settle at the same moment.

What AWMO means

In a true delivery versus payment system the two legs settle together, so AWMO should not occur there. It is used where the cash leg settles separately: some local markets, physical settlement, or a custodian that releases securities against a later payment.

Under PEND the payment can still arrive on the intended settlement date. Under PENF the payment is late and you are exposed to the counterparty for the value of the securities you delivered.

When you see it

  • In an MT548 or sese.024 on a delivery against payment (MT543) after the securities have left your account.

What to do next

  • Ask your custodian when and through which cash system the payment is expected, then chase the counterparty with the trade reference and amount.
  • Track the credit exposure until the cash arrives, and escalate under your counterparty risk procedure if the payment stays outstanding.

Where it appears in MT and ISO 20022

MT (ISO 15022)

  • MT548 sequence A2a (REAS), :24B::PEND//AWMO or :24B::PENF//AWMO.
  • MT537 sequence B1 or C3a, :24B::PEND//AWMO or :24B::PENF//AWMO.

MX (ISO 20022)

  • sese.024 SttlmSts/Pdg/Rsn/Cd/Cd = AWMO or SttlmSts/Flng/Rsn/Cd/Cd = AWMO.

Questions

Have my securities gone when I see AWMO?
Yes. AWMO means the securities were delivered and only the counterparty’s payment is still missing. With CMON, by contrast, nothing has moved yet.
