NETT marks a settlement instruction that results from netting several settlement obligations into one, as central counterparties do with their members’ trades.

What NETT means

A CCP nets each member’s buys and sells in a security for the same settlement date and sends one net settlement instruction instead of one per trade. Those net instructions carry NETT. The ECB’s collateral management expert group noted NETT for CCPs as an exception when it reviewed how transaction types are used, because the net instruction no longer represents one type of underlying business.

PAIR is a bilateral pair-off of specific trades. TURN links a receipt and a delivery that both settle. NETT is the result of a netting process run by a CCP or a netting service.

When you see it

  • On net settlement instructions from CCPs to CSDs and on the confirmations clearing members receive for them.
  • In clearing members’ MT537 pending reports, one line per net position rather than per trade.

What to do next

  • Do not use NETT for your own trades unless your account servicer runs a netting service and asks for it; a bilateral trade is TRAD and a pair-off is PAIR.
  • Reconcile NETT instructions against the CCP’s net position report, not against individual trades.

Where it appears in MT and ISO 20022

MT (ISO 15022)

  • MT540, MT541, MT542 and MT543: sequence E (SETDET), field 22F, :22F::SETR//NETT. The SETR qualifier is mandatory, so every instruction carries one code (format :4!c/[8c]/4!c; with a data source scheme a proprietary code may be sent instead).
  • Repeated in the confirmations MT544, MT545, MT546 and MT547 (sequence E, :22F::SETR//NETT) and in the MT548 status advice (sequence B, where SETR is mandatory when the sequence is present).
  • Optional in the statements: MT536 subsequence B1a2 and MT537 subsequences B2b and C2.

MX (ISO 20022)

  • sese.023: SttlmParams/SctiesTxTp/Cd = NETT (code list SecuritiesTransactionType23Code, unchanged in sese.023.001.09 to .013). SttlmParams/SctiesTxTp/Prtry carries a proprietary code instead.
  • Echoed in sese.024 at TxDtls/SttlmParams/SctiesTxTp/Cd and in sese.025 at SttlmParams/SctiesTxTp/Cd.
