How a FIGI is built
A FIGI (Financial Instrument Global Identifier) is an open standard of the Object Management Group (OMG). It has 12 characters and a code is never reused. The identifiers are in the public domain.
| Characters | Example (BBG000B9XRY4) | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| 1 and 2 | BB | The certified provider that issued the FIGI; two consonants, never BS, BM, GG, GB, GH, KY or VG, so a FIGI cannot look like an ISIN |
| 3 | G | Always G, for global |
| 4 to 11 | 000B9XRY | Consonants and digits, never vowels |
| 12 | 4 | Check digit (modulus 10 double add double, as for a CUSIP) |
FIGI, composite FIGI and share class FIGI
- The FIGI identifies the instrument on one trading venue, for example a share on one exchange.
- The composite FIGI groups the venue-level FIGIs of the same instrument in one country.
- The share class FIGI groups the instrument across countries.
- One ISIN therefore has many FIGIs, one per venue.
Questions
- What is a FIGI?
- A 12-character open identifier for financial instruments, defined as a standard by the Object Management Group. Unlike an ISIN, it identifies an instrument down to the trading venue.
- How is the FIGI check digit calculated?
- Letters count as 10 to 35 and digits as themselves; every second value is doubled and the digits of all values are added. The check digit is the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10.
- Why is my FIGI not valid?
- A character is mistyped, the third character is not G, a vowel appears in characters 4 to 11, or the prefix is one of the excluded pairs. The tool says which check failed.
- How do I find the FIGIs of an ISIN?
- Use the security lookup on zagtrader.com: paste the ISIN and it lists every FIGI with ticker and exchange.
