How a SEDOL is built

SEDOL (Stock Exchange Daily Official List) codes are issued by the London Stock Exchange for securities traded in the UK and for many securities traded elsewhere. A SEDOL has 7 characters: six letters or digits and a check digit. Vowels are never used, and codes issued since 2004 start with a letter, for example BH4HKS3. Older codes are all digits, for example 0263494.

How the check digit is calculated

Give each of the first 6 characters a value: digits keep their value, letters count from B = 11 to Z = 35.
Multiply the values by the weights 1, 3, 1, 7, 3 and 9.
Add the products. The check digit is the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10.

From SEDOL to ISIN

A GB ISIN that starts with GB00 carries the SEDOL in characters 5 to 11: SEDOL 0263494 becomes GB0002634946, with the ISIN check digit at the end. ISINs of other countries do not contain the SEDOL even when the security has one. See the ISIN checker.
