UETR Checker
Paste a UETR (Unique End-to-End Transaction Reference) to check its format. A UETR is a version 4 UUID of 36 characters, written in lower case with hyphens, for example eb6305c9-1f7f-49de-aed0-16487c27b42d. The tool tells you exactly what is wrong when it is not.
This checks the format only. It does not look the payment up: tracking a payment by its UETR needs access to a tracker through your bank. The check runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or logged.

What a UETR is
The UETR is a reference created once, by the bank that starts a payment, and carried unchanged by every bank in the chain. Because the same value travels from the first bank to the last, every party can refer to the same payment without matching their own references.
It is a version 4 UUID as defined by the IETF (RFC 4122, now RFC 9562): 32 hexadecimal digits in five groups of 8, 4, 4, 4 and 12, where the 13th digit is always 4 and the 17th is 8, 9, a or b.
Where the UETR appears
| Message | Where |
|---|---|
| MT103, MT202, MT202COV | Block 3 (user header), field 121, for example {3:{121:eb6305c9-1f7f-49de-aed0-16487c27b42d}}. Mandatory in these messages since November 2018. |
| pacs.008, pacs.009 | CdtTrfTxInf/PmtId/UETR, mandatory in CBPR+ |
| pacs.002, pacs.004 | OrgnlUETR: the UETR of the payment being rejected or returned |
| camt.056, camt.029 | OrgnlUETR of the payment to cancel or investigate |
| trck.001, trck.002 | Status updates and reports exchanged with a tracking facility |
How Swift gpi uses the UETR
Swift gpi is Swift's service for cross-border payments. Each bank that handles a gpi payment reports its status (for example accepted and in process, or credited to the beneficiary) to the gpi Tracker under the payment's UETR, so the sender and the banks can see where the payment is. Stop and recall requests for a payment also refer to its UETR.
Status values follow the ISO 20022 payment transaction status codes such as ACSP and ACCC. Ask your bank for the status of a payment: this site has no access to any tracker.
Questions
- What does UETR stand for?
- Unique End-to-End Transaction Reference: a version 4 UUID that identifies one payment across every bank that handles it.
- Can I track a payment with this tool?
- No. The tool only checks the format. Tracking needs access to a tracker such as the Swift gpi Tracker, which banks provide to their customers.
- Why must the UETR be in lower case?
- The Swift rules for field 121 and the ISO 20022 UUIDv4Identifier pattern only allow the lower-case hexadecimal digits a to f. An upper-case UETR is rejected.
- Who creates the UETR?
- The first bank in the payment chain creates it. Every later bank passes it on unchanged, and a cover payment (MT202COV or pacs.009 COV) carries the UETR of the underlying customer payment.
- Is a UETR the same as the end-to-end ID?
- No. The end-to-end identification (
EndToEndId) is set by the ordering customer and is free text of up to 35 characters. The UETR is a UUID set by the bank for tracking.
