LEI Search and Lookup

Search the Global LEI Index by company name or paste a 20-character LEI. For each match you see the legal name, the LEI, its registration status and next renewal date, the jurisdiction, the city and country of the legal address, and the direct and ultimate parent companies where they are reported.

The LEI itself is also checked: its length, its characters and the two check digits (ISO 17442, MOD 97-10), so a mistyped LEI is caught before any search.

Your browser sends the name or LEI you type straight to the GLEIF API (api.gleif.org). It does not pass through ZagTrader, and ZagTrader does not see, store or log it.

How an LEI is built

An LEI (Legal Entity Identifier, ISO 17442) has 20 letters and digits. It identifies a legal entity, such as a company, a fund or a government body, that takes part in financial transactions. Each LEI comes with reference data: the legal name, the legal and head office addresses, the registration authority and, where reported, who owns whom.

CharactersExample (HWUPKR0MPOU8FGXBT394)What it is
1 to 4HWUPPrefix of the LEI issuer (a Local Operating Unit, LOU) that first issued the code
5 to 18KR0MPOU8FGXBT3Entity-specific part, assigned by the issuer
19 and 2094Check digits, calculated with ISO 7064 MOD 97-10 as for an IBAN

What the registration status means

  • ISSUED: the LEI is current and its data has been renewed on time.
  • LAPSED: the entity did not renew the LEI by its next renewal date. The LEI still identifies the same entity, but its data may be out of date, and many brokers and banks ask for the LEI to be renewed before they trade.
  • PENDING_TRANSFER and PENDING_ARCHIVAL: the LEI is moving to another issuer.
  • RETIRED, MERGED and ANNULLED: the entity has ceased to exist, merged into another one, or the LEI was issued in error.
  • DUPLICATE: the entity has another LEI, which should be used instead.
  • The entity status is separate: ACTIVE means the legal entity exists; INACTIVE that it has been dissolved or no longer operates.

Parent companies

Since 2017 entities report their direct and ultimate accounting consolidating parents, the companies that consolidate them in their financial statements. When a parent is not reported, the record carries a reason instead, for example that the entity is owned by natural persons or that there is no consolidating parent.

Questions

What is an LEI number?
A 20-character code (ISO 17442) that identifies a legal entity in financial transactions. It links to public reference data: the legal name, addresses, registration details and parent companies.
How do I find the LEI of a company?
Type the company name in the search box above. The results come from the Global LEI Index published by GLEIF, which holds every LEI issued worldwide.
Is this LEI lookup free?
Yes. The LEI data is public and free to use under the CC0 licence, and this tool is free.
What does a lapsed LEI mean?
The entity did not renew its LEI by the renewal date. The code still identifies the entity, but the data has not been confirmed for over a year. Renewal is done through any accredited LEI issuer.
How are LEI check digits calculated?
Letters become numbers (A = 10 to Z = 35), the 18 characters are followed by 00, and the check digits are 98 minus the remainder of division by 97. The whole LEI is valid when the remainder of the 20 characters is 1.
Can I get an LEI here?
No. LEIs are issued and renewed by accredited issuers (Local Operating Units) listed on gleif.org. This tool only searches and checks them.
